The Old Man Creek Weir and Fishway forms part of the Murrumbidgee Computer Aided River Management (CARM) system, a world-class, $65 million infrastructure development and enhancement project that maximises the use of the Murrumbidgee River system.

The weir and fishway are situated in a purpose-built, 400m bypass channel, through which the river is diverted. This prevents downstream water loss, while still allowing for upstream fish migration. The channel diverts approximately 20 000ML of water each day, reducing erosion and losses and ensuring that water delivery for local irrigators continues to meet demand while simultaneously maintaining the community’s environmental assets.

Works included the supply and installation of three automated LayFlat (tilting) gates, four automated side winding gates, a bulkhead gate and a series of stop logs with lifting frames and storage racks. This is an innovative project that bolsters the environmental health of one of Australia’s most important waterways, the Murrumbidgee River System.
